Base Building

Yes, Dawn of War 4 has base building, and KING Art calls the system very similar to the first game's. Buildings unlock units and research, and each of the four factions builds in its own way.

Yes, Dawn of War 4 has full base building: KING Art says its system is "very similar to that of the first game", so you construct buildings, research and upgrade them, and each step unlocks new units. That makes it a return to the 2004 formula after Dawn of War 2, which Shacknews reviewed as "an RTS without base building". The game comes out Dec 3, 2026, so everything here comes from KING Art's posts and pre-release builds; as of Oct 31, 2026 no costs, build times or complete building lists are published. The clip is the official Game Overview Trailer.

How buildings unlock your army

Elliott Verbiest, Senior Game Designer, says buildings and building upgrades often unlock units, research and sometimes other buildings. Stronger units also ask for more than a finished building: KING Art says the stronger the unit, the more power and influence you need in battle before you can field it. Press Start's list from the Oct 2026 preview build names generators, upgrades and defenses among the structures, and generators tie the base to Resources and Territory. The clip is a creator's look at a pre-alpha build, Aug 2025.

Your Commanders come from the base too: outside the campaigns they are produced from the headquarters for a cost, usually mid-match after some unlocks, unless match settings say otherwise.

Each faction's way of building

Space Marines are what Verbiest calls the most straightforward: structures drop from orbit anywhere within vision, and upgrading them unlocks more units and research. The farther from your headquarters, the longer a drop takes, and enemies can see where it will land. Deep Silver's advice is to secure points with fortifications, then move with Reserves and the Thunderhawk Relay, since a small army cannot be everywhere. The clip is the official Space Marines trailer.

Orks build with almost any infantry, cheaply, and every structure comes armed, which makes creeping a base toward the enemy natural and shortens the walk to the front. In the Oct 2026 preview build, Gretchin do construction but need an Ork nearby, and can man a finished structure's weapons. Deep Silver says to spread bases and build many strongholds and Waaagh! Banners; the same page warns attackers that Ork buildings are armed but easy to destroy. Big Boss Battle, covering KING Art's Sep 9, 2026 Battlefield Report, adds that Orks build almost anywhere without a large penalty, and that scrap reinforces destroyed buildings. The clip is KING Art's Jul 2026 Battlefield Report.

Necrons grow outward from the upgradeable Tomb Citadel, which also produces their units. Many of their buildings can only stand on the Power Matrix, and each one spreads the Matrix farther, so the base and the economy are one thing. KING Art changed the Matrix after community feedback, without details in the written post. The clip is KING Art's Jul 2026 Battlefield Report.

Adeptus Mechanicus link structures to their headquarters in a Noosphere Network. More structures raise its level, which opens stronger units, upgrades and research, and makes units in range stronger and cheaper. Opponents will try to cut it apart: Deep Silver tells them to destroy Cogitator Relays in key positions. Creative Director Jan Theysen says this base building "feeds my inner city-builder".

Named buildings

This list is partial: no official list of buildings exists as of Oct 31, 2026.

Faction Building What it does
Space Marines Hammerfall Bunker A fortification option named by KING Art; no details given
Space Marines Thunderhawk Relay Units enter it and a Thunderhawk re-deploys them elsewhere; best on larger maps
Orks Waaagh! Banner Raises Waaagh!
Orks Stronghold Deep Silver's word for the bases to spread; its function is not detailed
Necrons Tomb Citadel Center of the base, upgradeable, produces units
Necrons Tomb Pylon Built anywhere by Canoptek Spyders; spawns Power Matrix and is a teleport target for units in the Citadel
Necrons Resurrection Gallery Pick a unit type; a fallen unit of that type comes back free
Necrons Generator Extends the Power Matrix, per Big Boss Battle
Adeptus Mechanicus Cogitator Relay Extends Noosphere links across the map, per Press Start
Adeptus Mechanicus Void Shield Covers almost a whole screen; enemies can walk in but cannot shoot through
Adeptus Mechanicus Garrisonable structure KING Art says they can build one; its name is not given

Buildings can fall

KING Art built a dedicated destruction system: buildings collapse once damaged enough, and stray fire can turn scenery and wrecks to rubble. In Multiplayer, the default mode, Annihilation, is won by destroying all enemy headquarters. See Combat, Cover and Retreat for how the fighting around a base works.

Frequently asked questions

Does Dawn of War 4 have base building? Yes. KING Art says Dawn of War 4's building system is very similar to the first game's, with buildings, research and upgrades unlocking new units.

How is Dawn of War 4's base building different for each faction? Space Marines drop structures from orbit, Orks build cheap armed structures with almost any infantry, Necrons spread a Power Matrix from their Tomb Citadel, and the Adeptus Mechanicus link structures in a Noosphere Network.

Is there a list of all buildings in Dawn of War 4? Not as of Oct 31, 2026. KING Art has named only some of them and says units and buildings together number more than 100.
