Dawn of War 4 vs Dawn of War 1, 2 and 3
Dawn of War 4 is closest to the first Dawn of War, which KING Art calls its guiding star, with base building, big armies, Requisition and Power and sync kills back. From Dawn of War 2 it takes Last Stand, retreat and world map dialogues; from Dawn of War 3, little but the base building it had restored.
Dawn of War 4 is most like the first Dawn of War: KING Art's creative director Jan Theysen says the studio asked "Dawn of War 1 or 2?" and chose to "really go back to Dawn of War 1, which for us was more this classic RTS with base building, with big battles," as he told TechRadar on Oct 23, 2026. It still borrows from the later games: Last Stand and the world map's dialogues come from Dawn of War 2. KING Art calls the result "a kind of reimagining of the first Dawn of War". Dawn of War 4 is out on Dec 3, 2026, so everything about it here is what the makers state or what press saw in pre-release builds.

Is Dawn of War 4 like Dawn of War 1 or 2?
Like the first, by design. The first two games are, in Theysen's words, "both great games, but very different": the first game is a base-building RTS with armies of squads, and Dawn of War 2's campaign gives you, in PC Gamer's words, "no resources, no base and at most 11 men." KING Art's internal mantra was "What would Dawn of War 1 do?", and Theysen told PCGamesN the aim was "big armies, base building, research, and economy."
That does not make it a remake. Theysen's own line is that "you're not trying to recreate the old game, you try to recreate the feeling people had", and the studio says it also looked at Dawn of War 2 and 3 and took whatever it thought might work.

What Dawn of War 4 takes from the first game
- Base building and economy. Battles are defined by territorial capture, squad management and base building, per KING Art, paid for with Requisition and Power from points you hold, as in 2004. See Base Building and Resources and Territory.
- Long battles with many units. Theysen says KING Art "wanted the battles to take a while, so that you can actually throw more units into the battle", so that you might win a battle and lose the war by spending everything on it.
- Reinforcing in the field. The first game let squads be reinforced anywhere on the map. Theysen told TechRadar that the feature was nearly left out as "a little bit weird", until the team tried it and loved it. See Combat, Cover and Retreat.
- Sync kills. The team named the first game's synchronized melee kills as what they loved most about it, and built the Combat Director on them.
- Orks as the first enemy. KING Art says the Orks are the opposing force again because the game is a reimagining of the first.
What it takes from Dawn of War 2
- Last Stand, the three-player co-op survival mode, returns; see Last Stand.
- World map dialogues between missions come from Dawn of War 2, IGN says; see Four Campaigns.
- Retreat and cover matter, with a retreat order that sends a unit to your closest production structure while it takes reduced damage. Cover is lighter than Dawn of War 2's: KING Art calls it usually an optimization, and PC Gamer's Fraser Brown found it a simple system where units are either protected or not in an Aug 2025 pre-alpha build.
- Cyrus, a Scout Sergeant in the first game and a squad leader in the second, returns as Captain Cyrus; see Blood Ravens.
How it differs from Dawn of War 3
Dawn of War 3 restored base building but built its multiplayer on three elite heroes and one win condition, and PC Gamer said its cover "might as well not exist". Dawn of War 4 gives each side one Commander, chosen before a match, three win conditions in multiplayer and cover that significantly reduces ranged damage. KING Art has not described its game as a reply to Dawn of War 3.
What previewers said
Press who played pre-release builds mostly read it as a sequel to the first game. Fraser Brown's PC Gamer preview of Aug 2025 called it possibly "the true sequel to the original game that we've been waiting for", though he missed the original's more complex cover. Later builds and the full range of opinion are on Previews and Reception; no reviews exist before launch.
Do you need to play the old games first?
No. KING Art says Dawn of War 4 is "very much its own completely new thing", a new story that includes familiar faces. It is set on Kronus about 200 years after Dark Crusade, the most closely linked older game; see Story and Setting. Play order and what to buy are on Dawn of War Games in Order.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dawn of War 4 more like Dawn of War 1 or Dawn of War 2? Dawn of War 4 is more like Dawn of War 1. KING Art made the first game its model, bringing back base building, big armies and the Requisition and Power economy that Dawn of War 2's campaign dropped.
Does Dawn of War 4 have base building like Dawn of War 1? Yes. Dawn of War 4 has base building, research and territory capture, as the first Dawn of War did; Dawn of War 2's campaign had none.
What does Dawn of War 4 take from Dawn of War 2? Dawn of War 4 brings back Dawn of War 2's Last Stand co-op mode, its world map dialogues between missions and the character Cyrus, now a Captain, and it keeps cover and retreat.
Is Dawn of War 4 like Dawn of War 3? Not much. Dawn of War 4 drops Dawn of War 3's three-elite heroes for one Commander per match, gives cover real weight and has four campaigns instead of one; the base building is the main thing the two share.
Is Dawn of War 4 a remake of the first Dawn of War? No. Dawn of War 4 is a new game with a new story on Kronus; KING Art calls it a reimagining of the first game's feeling, not a recreation of it.
Do I need to play the earlier games before Dawn of War 4? No. KING Art says Dawn of War 4 is its own new story, so no earlier game is required, though Dark Crusade shares its planet.

Dawn of War 3Dawn of War 3 came out on Apr 27, 2017. Critics gave it a respectable 77, but its mix of real-time strategy and MOBA ideas lost players, Relic stopped major content within a year, and Dawn of War 4 returned to the first game as its model.

Combat, Cover and RetreatDawn of War 4 gives squads cover, a retreat order and on-field reinforcement to preserve them and their veterancy. KING Art calls auto-reinforce the most powerful of the three and cover an optimization, not a deciding factor.
