Definitive Edition
Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War: Definitive Edition is Relic's remaster of the first game and its three expansions, released Aug 14, 2025 on Steam and GOG at $29.99. It adds 4K, 64-bit and a mod manager but does not rebalance the game; the cheaper Anniversary Edition is the unremastered bundle.
Dawn of War: Definitive Edition is Relic's remaster of the first game with Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm, released on Aug 14, 2025 on Steam and GOG at $29.99 list. It brings full 4K, 64-bit, new hotkey presets and a mod manager, and it deliberately leaves the balance alone. Against the older Anniversary Edition, it is the better way to play for most people. It is not Dawn of War 4, and it does not include Dawn of War 2. The clip is the closing cards of Relic's Aug 2025 trailer.

What it adds
Relic's launch post lists full 4K, textures at four times the originals, a move from 32-bit to 64-bit, Classic, Grid and Modern hotkey presets, image-based lighting, better shadows, a farther camera and draw distance, and widescreen to 21:9. Pathfinding updates came after players asked at the announcement, and an integrated Mod Manager handles the community's 20 years of mods. It also runs everything from one executable, where earlier versions meant jumping between them.
What it does not change
Asked if the game was rebalanced, design director Philippe Boulle said no, only bug fixes such as Slag Deposits restored on a few maps. The default camera sits farther back, a change modders had made for years. All nine factions, skirmish and multiplayer use the Soulstorm ruleset.
Campaigns
Relic lists four: the Fall of Tartarus; Winter Assault on Lorn V; Dark Crusade on Kronus, with seven factions, non-linear; and Soulstorm in the Kaurava System, with nine factions, non-linear. Dark Crusade is the one Dawn of War 4 follows.

The Anniversary Edition arrived in Sep 2024 as a free upgrade for existing owners, marking 20 years. Its store page sits under the "Warhammer Classics" banner. Choose it to save money or for the original build; choose the Definitive Edition for modern screens, 64-bit and easy mods. A separate Dawn of War 2 Anniversary Edition covers the second game, and it has no Definitive Edition.
The upgrade for owners
If you own the Anniversary Edition, the Definitive Edition's Steam page sells a Veterans Upgrade at $19.99 list, $13.99 on Oct 31, 2026. Relic said at the date reveal that a 30% discount for Anniversary Edition owners applies on Steam and GOG and stays for the foreseeable future. GOG's current prices were not checked for this page.
Reviews
OpenCritic has a Top Critic Average of 76 from 22 reviews, with GameWatcher at 7.5 ("conservative and surface-level," but still the best way to play), GamingBolt at 8 and The Games Machine at 5.5. Reports of its Metascore disagree (74 on one Metacritic snapshot, 77 in a 2025 roundup), and the live figure was not confirmed, so this page does not state one. Steam players are warmer, at 86% of 6,939, and 89% of 178 in the last 30 days on Oct 31, 2026.
Support since launch
Relic was still patching a year on. Update 2.10.0 on Aug 11, 2026 marked "a full year of support", hot fix 2.10.2 on Aug 25 closed "a 12-year-old exploit" that let one player command another's buildings, and hot fix 2.10.3 on Sep 17 fixed Winter Assault and Soulstorm campaign errors.
A note on Dawn of War 4
The edition had only just arrived when Dawn of War 4 was shown at Gamescom Opening Night Live, per IGN. The two come from different makers, Relic here and KING Art Games on the new game, and no bonus for owners is stated on Dawn of War 4's store page as of Oct 31, 2026. The full lineup is on Dawn of War Games in Order.
